About our Workshops
Here you’ll find details of our upcoming events, booking links, information, snapshots, FAQs and testimonials of previous Tribers that attended our workshops.
Fungi naturally seek to grow and connect through spores and mycelium. At MYCOTRIBE we look to imitate this growth via the spread of knowledge, by learning together we bring mind to mind forging connections anew.
Fungi Cultivation Workshops with Darryl
We believe knowledge is best shared and so, we have developed mobile workshops to take around the country! Our workshops seek to share the knowledge of mushroom growing practises via a hands-on based learning experience where you’ll understand not just how to grow medicinal and gourmet mushrooms but the why behind the techniques and methodologies.
To provide an intimate learning experience we limit our workshops to 15 people per session and encourage any and all fungi related questions!
We think no workshop is complete without at least one take home element to continue your learning and so our gift to you is your very own GrowBox!! We’ll prepare the box together and the weeks following our time together you’ll watch your magical fungi flourish with aftercare support from Darryl in a peer group setting.
You’ll learn all about mushroom cultivation, the life cycle of a fungi from spores in a petri dish to fruiting of beautiful mushrooms, interwoven with practical elements giving you an insight into how we work in our laboratory setting at the MushLove Farm as well as an understanding of the terminologies and methods used should you wish to continue the journey after your first grow.
We can’t wait to see you at one of our workshops and watch our tribe expand, as the mycelium network grows, we become Spores Connecting, Mind to Mind.

FAQs
We provide aftercare support following our time together where we cover any and all fungi related questions you may have. Here are the most frequently asked questions we’ve had before, during and after our workshops!
FAQs
I can't look after plants to save my life. Do I need to be green fingered to do the workshop?
Nope! Our workshops are for anybody green and non-green fingered alike. Between you and I, Darryl is fairly useless at growing plants, just ask the many dried out succulents he’s cared for over the years. When you leave the workshop you’ll have a much better idea of what fungi need to flourish.
I'm interested... What do I need to bring with me?
Nothing except a willingness to learn about all things fungi! We’ll provide you with everything you need including your take home growbox and a sturdy carrier bag to carry it home in.
Sounds great, how big is the growbox I'm taking home? Will I need space at home for it?!
We designed the growbox to be small and conspicuous! The box is roughly 15cm by 20cm and 20cm in height, it can be stored almost anywhere in the home; on the kitchen side, on top of a wardrobe or tucked away in a cupboard.
Once we're done in the workshop I'm on my own? What if I forget what I need to do!? PANIC!
Don’t stress. We think of each workshop group as a mini Tribe within the MYCOTRIBE. We encourage everyone to join a messaging group we create specifically for your group only, we encourage you to share your progress, tips you’ve picked up and your successes too. Darryl is in every group to answer any and all questions you might have afterwards.
Oh okay that's great. How long until my mushies start to grow?
Once you take your box home you can expect mushrooms to grow within four to eight weeks time, but just as nature is untameable, they may be quicker or they may take longer. Just like growing anything, various factors including the temperature of the room, ambient air flow and the materials you use in your grow can effect the timing.
Wait, did you say they need to be a certain temperature to grow!?
Yes and no, various varieties mushrooms have different ranges of ideal growing temperatures. The mushrooms we chose to grow in our workshops have been specifically chosen as they grow between 18°C to 24°C , most homes have an ambient temperature that sits nicely in this range. The temperature affects the timing of the grow, but the grow will happen!
I'm going away to Barbados/Antartica/Skegness for a few weeks, will my mushrooms be OK whilst I'm gone?!
For the sake of the question we’ll assume you won’t be taking your box in your checked luggage to Barbados or to the beach of Skeggy. The box will be absolutely fine, you might come home to some serious fungi growing whilst you’ve been away but they will be all good. If you’re really worried several of our Tribers give their boxes to friends to look after… nothing like a community of people helping each other out eh?!
How often should I water my mushies?
Here’s the neat trick, you don’t. The materials we use to create your box are at an optimum moisture content for the mushrooms to grow, the substrate contains the right amount of water for your fungi to flourish without any added water. We call it the “Set and Forget” method, set it on your kitchen side and forget about it for a while, no attention needed!
I see mushrooms!!! How often can I check on my little mushroom babies?
Incredible! We encourage leaving the lid on the grow box for at least the first four weeks to allow the mycelium to build strength, but once you start to see mushrooms there is no harm in cracking the lid and taking a peek every day or two. Avoid taking the lid off entirely until we’re ready to harvest to lock in that optimum moisture content we spoke of in the previous question.
Oooooh, then when do I harvest?
This depends on the mushroom and there isn’t a straight cut answer for all mushrooms, for this one you’ll have to rely on our aftercare guides we provide after you come join us in a workshop!
Fair enough, so once we harvest our mushies that's it right?
Fungi are resilient little organisms and they’ll want to keep growing once you’ve harvested, all they need is more water to replace all that high quality H2O they’ve guzzled up. We call this water replacement a “Flush”, and the box will keep producing, the record from Faye, one of our early Tribers, had a successful 18 flushes(!) though typically you’ll get three to eight. Eventually the nutrients from the grain runs out and the box stops producing.
Amazing, I had four great flushes but what do I do with the box now it's finished?
We would love for you to continue the growing journey and we thought of a way we can help. We have been working on different strains that work in the box. You can purchase replacement kits through our website which will contain the raw materials for you to recreate your grow box at home ready to start again. We only send out materials that we’re sure will be successful so the options will vary but we aim to always have at least one strain available.
You are always welcome on another workshop, we offer a discount for returning Tribers and we love seeing our friends again (that’s you!), we’ll try to make sure you try something new the second time around too!
If you don’t wish to continue the mushroom growing journey we hope you enjoyed the process! The box makes for pretty useful storage around the kitchen or shed! We have loads dotted throughout the kitchen cupboards, perks of the job and all. Failing that you can recycle the box and lid as with any other hard plastic.

D's Testimonial
“This was the third MYCOTRIBE mushroom growing workshop I have either participated in or witnessed. It has been brilliant to see how Darryl has improved the workshop and the techniques. It has such a nice flow now with a good amount of theoretical and practical work. Darryl is incredibly knowledgeable on the subject and is always happy to answer any questions. He brings a lot of examples, pictures, equipment, etc to the workshops so you walk away having a good understanding of the complete lifecycle of a mushroom, what can go wrong, what to look out for, and most importantly, how to succeed.” – D
J's Testimonial
“Overall, an engaging workshop, packed with precise, practical knowledge that was easy to follow. A relaxed approach that made the experience enjoyable and felt comfortable enough to ask questions. Well-designed instruction manual with pictures to support the aftercare and what to expect. The idea of a WhatsApp group is a great way to stay engaged and understand what’s going right or wrong with the process. I would recommend this workshop to anyone who is interested in mushroom growing. I would never have thought to grow my own mushrooms, as I didn’t know where to start. This has provided me with the tools, guidance and confidence to actually make this an interesting hobby. Thank you, and looking forward to what comes next.” – J
